Identifying Damp

Did you know that over 6% of homes in the United Kingdom suffer from damp? Don’t let your home join the statistic and identify the damp before it gets out of control!

Living in a damp home can be horrific. Not only does it look horrible, but you’re more likely to suffer from respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. It can also take affect on your immune system.

What cause damp?

Mould and damp are caused by excess moisture. Whether by humid atmospheres, leaking pipes or rain seeping in around window frames. Damp is an extremely common problem, and is an excellent sign that some renovation work needs to be carried out.

Moisture in buildings can be caused by leaking pipes, rising damp in basements or ground floors, or rain seeping in because of damage to the roof or around window frames.

How can I identify the problem?

There are a few common ways to identify the problem before it get's out of hand. Of course, the only real solution for damp is to completely replace the damaged areas, so the main goal here is to identify the local area of damp, before it spreads and destroys a huge area!

A simple identifier of damp, is cracks in the skirting, clear moss growing, or black patches spreading. As can be seen in the photo below, small patches of darker moss, as well as green is clearly appearing in the silicone, indicating that the area is starting to suffer from damp.

This problem isn't simply located to the wall and ceiling however. As can be seen below, the problem has clearly spread to the floor, likely from the shower, resulting in damaged grout and tiles becoming loose, or even cracked. As time goes on, this problem will spread further and further, with devastating results for the home.

One of the clearest identifiers is cracks in the ceiling, black mold or moss spreading across the surface, as can be seen in our photo below. At this stage, the problem has clearly evolved from the above moss, and has spread right across the surface, causing great damage.

At this stage, you've got a massive problem on your hands. The issue has clearly spread from the damp causing area, across the ceiling, meaning huge replacements are likely necessary. As can be seen below, the problem has also already spread to other walls, away from the shower, proving that this is not just an isolated instance.
